UnConvention Brisbane is a grassroots-led music conference for independent promoters, labels, entrepreneurs, writers, technologists, innovators and artists. The aims of UnConvention Brisbane are to connect young and emerging practitioners with each other; to provide them with practical and achievable strategies to develop sustaining careers in and around music; and to encourage them to work together to create and support cultural activities in Brisbane.
The 2011 event’s six panels include Sustaining the Chaos, curated by Kellie Lloyd (Q Music); Run Your Own Venue, curated by Blair Hughes (Brisbane Sounds); Music and Failure, curated by local musician Edward Guglielmino; We Don’t Play Guitars, co-curated by electronic music producer Alex Yabsley and hip-hop artist Ray Bourne (Rainman); Documenting Brisbane Music, curated by photographer and blogger Justin Edwards; and Music Geekery, curated by visualist Jaymis Loveday.
A series of planned workshop sessions running concurrently at The Edge throughout the weekend will include topics such as DIY Electronics and Gear Building; You better get a lawyer son: rock ‘n roll governance and other misnomers; Run Your Own: Setting up and managing a DIY music space; We don’t got no steenking budget!: guerrilla music video production; UnMixing: local producers pull apart their projects; and Self Publishing Online and Off.
