These five guys from Holland play genuine indie-pop-music. The words and songs are somewhat melancholic, but the way it all sounds gives it a bright spark of hope. Sounds like: Blonde Redhead / Eels / Wilco / Tindersticks.
In the past year 18 year old Newcastle based singer/songwriter Beth Jeans Houghton has garnered a reputation as an antidote to the current crop of acoustic songstresses. With her alternative blend of experimental folk, Beth has been hailed by the NME as “a Joni Mitchell for the anti-folk generation”. With influences ranging from Frank Zappa, Vashti Bunyan, Fourtet and Love, Beth has cultivated a sound that is truly her own. Since her first performance in August 06 Beth has played alongside a diverse collection of artists such as Bon Iver, Imogen Heap, The Wombats, Fionn Regan, Jeffrey Lewis, The Mystery Jets, Scott Matthews, Josephine Foster, White Magic, Bowerbirds, King Creosote, Jana Hunter, Alasdair Roberts, PG Six, Dead Meadow, Phosphorescent, Voice of the Seven Woods, Tom Brosseau, St Vincent, Euros Childs, Diane Cluck, Jack Savoretti and Stephen Fretwell amongst others. At last years Greenman Festival Devendra Banhart invited Beth to play one of her songs during his set on the main stage to an 8000 strong crowd describing her as, ‘very lovely, a musical magician’. Beth has a track on ‘We Are All Circling The Stars’ (compilation – Cosmos Recordings) and another on ‘Bearded Ladies Vol II’ (compilation -Bird/Finders Keepers) both out spring 08. Beth is currently writing/recording, and is gigging regularly throughout the UK.

Do you like rock music? Most probably, yes. It’s the most expressive medium in human history and provides undemanding employment for many thousands. Rock music is all around us. It’s there in Iggy and it’s there in the high igneous rock formations of Helvellyn and Scafell Pike. It’s there in Black Francis, but also in the big Black Bear and in the rolling slopes of Black Sail Pass. Rock music is everywhere and nowhere. Missy Elliott, José Mourinho and Wayne Coyne are rock music. U2, Mussolini and tuberculosis are not rock music. Do You Like Rock Music? is rock music.
Do You Like Rock Music? is the third album from British Sea Power. It was made in the Czech Republic, Canada and Fort Tregantle – a 19th Century fortification up on the Cornish cliffs. It was recorded by a band unafraid to embrace the far poles in arts and entertainment. BSP have toured with and been commended by David Bowie, The Flaming Lips, Lou Reed, Radiohead and Jarvis Cocker. But they’ve also been invited to play in celebration of the life and times of Sir John Betjeman, the late UK Poet Laureate, born in 1906. At the launch party for their debut album, BSP played alongside The Copper Family, a clan of Sussex folk singers who’ve been going for 200 years.
Do You Like Rock Music? is the album on which British Sea Power’s long game comes to a compelling conclusion. Good is arrayed against evil; rock music against non-rock music. Subject matter includes floods on Canvey Island, economic migration, Slavia Prague FC, heartache and the Apocalypse – plus the Great Skua and the wrestler born Shirley Crabtree and known as Big Daddy. The Great Skua is a big piratical sea bird. Here it provides the title for a gorgeous sweep of instrumental music – one strand in an album that moves from the six-minute rock fantasia of Lights Out For Darker Skies to the beauteous alt-rock pastoral-soul of No Need To Cry. More than ever, writing and singing is equally divided between brothers Yan and Hamilton.
The song Waving Flags – a stirring choral-rock tribute to Polish plumbers and groundbreaking nudist Hedy Lamarr – is perhaps the band’s most cogent, powerful moment yet. This is rock music as it should be, both ridiculous and profound – providing for the aching needs of both the higher and lower self.
British Sea Power formed in 2000. From frozen Cumbria came brothers Yan Scott Wilkinson and Neil Hamilton Wilkinson – plus school friend Matthew Wood. Guitarist Martin Noble arrived all the way from West Yorkshire. BSP released their first record in 2001 – the Fear Of Drowning single on their own Golden Chariot label. But it was the band’s live performances that defined their first years.
There were riotous shows in remarkable surroundings. BSP world go on to play by the sea on the Scilly Isles, underground in a Cornish slate mine and at the Chelsea Flower Show. At the John Betjeman Centenary Gala, they performed alongside Ronnie Corbett, Nick Cave and The Prince Of Wales. When BSP played the 2002 Reading Festival, Rolling Stone seemed to say the rest of the weekend’s entire bill paled before them: “Fuck this puerile drivel, we’re going to see British Sea Power… British Sea Power rule!”
Rough Trade founder Geoff Travis came to see BSP and signed them on the spot. The band’s debut album, The Decline Of British Sea Power, was released in 2003. Confidently contradicting its title, the album was an audacious jamwagon that swung abruptly from 30-second choral swoons to the 14-minute Lately. The latter took in life, death, George Formby and the Scandinavian sea lanes of the Kattegat. In between lay the post-punk pocket-battleships Carrion and Remember Me.
“Stadium-sized melodies and exquisite songwriting,” said MOJO of BSP’s debut. The NME was in accord: “Out of this world… a dazzling debut.” The Sunday Times simply stated that BSP were, “The best band in Britain.”
There were concerts from St Petersburg to San Francisco – including tours with the Flaming Lips, Interpol, Pulp and The Killers. In 2004, Time Out made BSP Live Band Of The Year at their annual awards. In 2005, BSP released their second album, Open Season. It was a more streamlined, graceful record, but again the press located strength in depth.
“A marvellous album,” reported The Guardian. “A triumphant lesson in sweeping toward the mainstream with your imagination and mystery intact.” Rolling Stone recorded that: “The first few songs are so jaw-slackeningly great it can take days to get to the album’s highlight, the epic eight-minute medley of Please Stand Up and North Hanging Rock.” The NME said, “Wonderful… breathes with originality, poise and grace.”
In the wake of Open Season, BSP made a single with Somerset hit-makers The Wurzels and played on stage with German avant garde enigmas Faust. No one else did this. The latter engagement concluded with an energetic fist fight.
Now British Sea Power unveil their finest hour. Do You Like Rock Music? was recorded around the world – produced by BSP and Graham Sutton (Jarvis Cocker, Bark Psychosis), and recorded by Howard Bilerman (Hotel2Tango studio) with help from Efrim Menuck (Godspeed You! Black Emperor). It’s also an album that looks the world squarely in the eye. “It’s our version of Doctor Jekyll And Mr Hyde,” says guitarist Martin Noble. “It’s about cherry wood and Kevlar – about the good and the bad. There are reasons for anxiety at the moment – but if we’re in danger let’s address the danger with optimism, loud distorted chords and the knowledge that we’re at least trying. That’s rock music, isn’t it?”
Do you like rock music? Of course you do. It’s still here. And, on this evidence, has no reason to go away.

Look up ‘Cats In Paris’ on t’internet and you’ll be greeted by some freak’s feline friends superimposed onto famous landmarks. Even that’s not as weird as this lot, though; Cats In Paris are a crooked bunch of sonically hyperactive eccentrics, making the kind of gloriously experimental racket that used to make John Peel tingle with delight. Chris Henniker, aka, Lowry is the frontman and lyricist of Mancunian Alternative Hip Hop outfit Coupe De Ville.
Chris, under the guise of Hustle Productions, has spent the last 4 years working with a strong DIY ethos setting up a recording studio in Manchester whilst managing, promoting and performing in Coupe De Ville.
Now currently signed to independent Manchester label Fat Northerner Records and about to release their debut single and album, Chris and the band are busier than ever trying to make their own rules and forge their own path in the music industry.
Introducing…”Coupe De Ville”.
They are a collective of musicians & songwriters hailing from Manchester.
As with all things unique it is hard to categorise or put Coupe De Ville in a box. Together they have formulated a sound which exists in a space between Hip Hop & Rock, layered with elements dub & electronica. This is a band who don’t stick to the rules or by any means play it safe. Once you’ve seen them, you can make your own conclusions.
Theirs is an intuitive noise, driven by 6 very individual personalities, unstoppable momentum, friendship and pure talent. After notable support slots with The Fall, Reverend Sound System and The Furious Five and recently signed to Independent Manchester label Fat Northerner Records these boys seem to be on their way to fulfilling their potential.
Los Angeles / Reykjavik based singer/songwriter/violin guy Roland Hartwell has been creating one helluva buzz with his alt/pop/rock band Cynic Guru, which combines elements of Tears For Fears, The Beatles and leftfield oddness into an affable pop mix. A violinist with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra (who’ve also crossed musical paths with native daughter Bjork), Hartwell has played for Dr. Dre, Cher, P. Diddy, Mandy Moore, Burt Bacharach, Elvis Costello, Brian Adams, Leanne Rimes, Dionne Warwick, and Barry White.
"Red + Yellow =" is the new album from Manchester-based improvisational musician Denis Jones. With this, his second album, Denis has at last managed to capture the intensity of his live performances in a studio environment, working with various engineers and finalising the recording and mixing at Airtight Studios with Tom Knott (The Earlies).
"Red + Yellow =" features contributions from some of Manchester’s finest musicians, including Luke Flowers (Cinematic Orchestra, Corinne Bailey-Rae), Paddy Steer (Homelife); trumpet player, band-leader and Gondwana Records label boss Matt Halsall ; Jon Thorne (Lamb, Lou Rhodes) and Aidan Smith, but for the most part, it features Denis himself on guitar, piano, organ, percussion, vocals, beat-boxing and electronics.
Denis began his musical life as a singer-songwriter in the classic UK mould of the likes of John Martyn; over the last three years he has developed a show-stopping live performance based around the core of his exceptional, unique guitar-playing style and rich, soulful voice. Utilising a loop station and all manner of samplers and effects, Denis creates vast, complex orchestrations of beat-box rhythms, multi-layered vocals and other-worldly sounds which veer from subtle heart-wrenching folk and blues to heavy bass-driven electronica.
The album will be preceded by a limited edition 10" EP of Clap Hands, featuring remixes by Paddy Steer and Graham Massey.
"On 'Red +Yellow =', Denis reveals his “painter's mind" when it comes to sound, in the same way as the best Joni Mitchell albums have a root system but enjoy expansive cloudy impressionism. His voice is an emotionally arresting instrument, connected to his core so he has the confidence to throw it around and even up into fifth gear when needed. The second string to his bow is a guitar style that at times reminds me of the pastoralism of John Abercrombie and Ralf Towner's work for the ECM label. He's never heard of them either - just hacked his way into the same open fields by way of a curious mind." Graham Massey

Down the Tiny Steps are a Glasgow-based electro-folk-pop trio. That sounds cack, but they are not. They spend most of their time carving pop classics from the very tissue of their souls. Songwriter, Jonnie Common records 24hours a day, hooked up to a phantom powered saline drip. He has written over 250 songs and is prepared to admit that at least 10 of them might be pish.
Gabriel Minnikin is a singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist from Nova Scotia Canada. Even though Gabriel has been seen around Manchester since the year 2000, he has only recently made it his home. It wasn’t until 2004 that Gabriel would finally become an official Mancunian. It would also be the year he released his critically acclaimed debut record ‘Hard Feelings’. Steeped in the loam of Americana and hewn from the rough wood of blues, old time folk, country, & mountain music, Hard Feelings would establish Gabriel as a recognized singer/songwriter. He has been fortunate enough to tour and share stages with loads of great artists, Garth Hudson, Calexico, & The Handsome Family to name a few. 2006 he found himself back in Canada recording what would be his sophmore release ‘Wandering Midnight’. Despite being a relatively unheard record, it did produce some more interest from fans, labels, and press. Gabriel’s voice has an unbelievable range. He has received work for BBC voiceovers, gained radio support from John Peel & Bob Harris, has done television appearances, toured extensively, produced records, been a side musician for many great artists, and has even had a hand in recording a film soundtrack. 2008 will hopefully be the year that his third record will be recorded and released to the masses. Think Tom Waits in The Wizard of Oz.
Sam Duckworth is Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly., the Southend-born troubadour who named his solo project after a solution from an old Batman adventure game, surfed the enigma of it to the Top Thirty with his home-made 2006 debut album ‘The Chronicles Of A Bohemian Teenager’ (an album written and recorded on a self-discovery tour of the UK). He then hooked in Kate Nash and Billy Bragg to guest on the similarly successful 2008 follow up ‘Searching For The Hows And Whys’ (co- produced with Nitin Sawhney), became a leading figure in the political pop scene (a pub run-in with the BNP prompted Sam to become heavily involved with the Love Music Hate Racism campaign) and helped spark the new wave of modern folk heroes that’s brought us Jamie T and Jack Penate.
Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. 3rd album inspired by a new love for hip-hop and a rediscovered passion for drum’n’bass.
“Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly” is available now at http://www.getcapewearcapefly.com/ he is also is in the middle of UK tour.

Effortlessly combining a party rocking blend of hip-hop, house, garage, breakbeat, ghetto flavours and drum ‘n’ bass, HeavyFeet are at the forefront of the bass music phenomenon. As the duo continue to roll out their ever-evolving sound through a string of bass-heavy releases with some of the leaders of the game (Skint, Bingo and Passenger) and the coolest indie labels around (Plant Music, Party Like Us and Nightshifters), 2010 is looking like their biggest year yet, with remixes also dropping for the likes of Roisin Murphy, DJ Zinc, Nick Thayer, Mele, Deekline, Two Fresh and KillaQueenz, as well as the explosion of their brand new record label concept, Stamp! Beats.
HeavyFeet announced the launch of the Stamp! Beats projects in February with its first release set for April. The concept, to create a unique music delivery platform releasing original HeavyFeet music complimenting the varied genres featured in their DJ sets. Not content with being just another small indie label, a new HeavyFeet single is released on Stamp! Beats every first Monday of the month. Each single features a different carefully chosen vocalist, some well known, some more underground, each bringing their own unique performance style to HeavyFeet’s chunky beats. With a fresh approach to the delivery and promotion of the releases, Stamp! Beats offers fans the opportunity to download the original mix of every single release for free, for a limited period, encouraging them to enjoy and share the cutting edge HeavyFeet sound, whilst allowing them the option to purchase the more familiar club mix and guest remix on their own accord.
Since their inception in 2007, HeavyFeet have DJed all across the UK, Europe and the United States, regularly smashing dancefloors with their energetic party sound, always looking for new production inspiration from hot international scenes. With their productions hitting as high as No.6 on the Top 100 Beatport chart, radio airplay via BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 1Xtra, XFM, Kiss FM and Galaxy FM on all currently released Stamp! Beats releases, as well as features in music publications DJ Mag and IDJ Magazine and online support from The Times Online and dozens of key music blogs, the second half of 2010 is certainly shaping up to be an extremely period for team HeavyFeet!
I am Kloot is a left handed card game made famous in the diaries of Jerome K. Jerome. The rules of the game are expounded in the Jerome’s sequel “Three Men on the Bummel.” The general ethos of the sport is to; at all time to conduct oneself in a dishonest, cruel and deceiving manner. On winning a hand, one is required to gloat in the harshest fashion, provoking shame and self loathing amongst fellow players. Tactically it is traditional to quickly raise the stakes so high as to leave the opposition recklessly insecure and anxious to commit to future endangering wagers that on transaction would throw the opponent into a Dickensian poverty. Games rarely last more than one hand and all betting commitments are to be honoured and enforced on the night.

Country-groomed folk-pop songs. Most often fashioned in a tin shed. He has played to 24,000 football fans at half-time on the pitch at Molineux. John Smith is quietly becoming recognized as one of the most exciting voices on the British Folk scene. He has spent several years solidly on the road, touring with folk legend John Martyn and accompanying Davy Graham on his final UK tour. He has also supported John Renbourn, Martin Carthy, Jools Holland, Martin Simpson, Tunng, and has shared the stage with Cara Dillon, James Yorkston and Gomez. As well as his own packed-out solo tours, John has built a strong word-of-mouth following on the festival circuit and has a devoted fanbase at home and abroad.
His new album, recorded in the swamps and forests of the deepest southern USA, will be out in a few months.
Favourite Cake: Chocolate
Most hip-folkies tread the well worn path of revivalism, forgetting to forge a new path all of their own. One man foraging a lonesome trail is John Stammers, who not only creates beautiful and beguiling tales of love ‘n’ loss, but also manages to create folk-tales of a very modern place. A place that knows no boundaries. A place that we’ve all been to… but will never see on a map. In amongst the Celtic drones, the ghosts of traditional ballads, lies something of the Appalachian mountains and songs of the creeks and peaks. Moreso, John Stammers makes soul music for the reflective and the dreamy. A new LP recorded, channeling the spirit of acid-folk players since lost to the ether, melding the fire and ice of country heart-ache and bringing the loose jazz of late night bebop, with a stage presence that’s both welcoming and intense, John Stammers is a man to get lost in, a real life troubadour to follow into the shadows of the forest.
Kaya & Captain Temper – the band - was born in 2010 sparked by the creative partnership of Kaya and what was previously First Mate Temper in the in a random talk on the Black Pearl (their friend’s boat) on tour in France last summer.
2010 so far has seen them return to play in France three times, two mini UK tours, two quick visit to Norway and regular gigs in the North West including their residency at the famous Studio 2, Parr street.
A long awaited single is due to be released in the autumn, with an album to come early 2011 –partly recorded in the Parr Street studios, partly on location back in their port away from home in Le Havre, France.
Kaya and The Captain first got to know each other backstage of the Royal Variety Show in 2007 whilst singing backing for Seal and Jon Bon Jovi with Sense of Sound. A hectic year of singing with people like Ringo Starr at the Liverpool Capital of Culture Opening, finalists in BBC1’s Last choir standing BBC Nativity followed, and this is where the friendship and creative partnership flourished into creating music together.
They have played together now since January 2009, but it’s only now the firm band identity is formed, joined by fantastic Deston Bloor on drums and Matt the
With long track record of gigs including playing alongside Brett Anderson (Suede), Cherry Ghost, Noah and the Whale, Marina & The Diamonds, Foy Vance, Sandi Thom, Polly Mackey & The Pleasure Principle, The Wombats and pretty much the whole Liverpool scene, the slightly renewed sound has given the band a firm place in their song based alternative melodic rock, whilst incorporating blues, funk, roots and nu folk influences.
Kaya has become a well-know name on the local scene and was chosen as BBC Merseyside ‘Artist of the Month’ and as ‘Spotlight Artist’ for Liverpool Acoustic. Her debut album 'Balloon in a Cactus Field' was released on Ultimate Fake Records and is “a collection of beautifully crafted songs with a surprising bite”.
Captain Temper in his solo ventures with his civilian name; Dave O Grady, has also been a regular on the scene for a while, and it was a natural process to put the two heads together, although you may still see them running around on their own.
In short, Kaya & Captain Temper is a dynamic act and prolific songwriters with most of the second album already written.
Go to the Myspace at kayamusic.com or to their facebook group as Kaya & Captain temper for gig listings, to listen and read regularly updated blogs or buy the first album and listen anywhere while you’re waiting for the next ;o)

Liam is an alternative/folk artist, from Manchester, England. He recorded and played with his backing group, "The Slowdown Family" on his debut album "Show Me How The Spectres Dance", but now performs under the name Liam Frost. Frost currently releases music through his own imprint, Emperor Records.
Whilst relentlessly peddling their peculiar brand of Lyric-Driven Dirt-Swing (an incomparable rendering of jive-smitten cabaret blues) Louis Barabbas & The Bedlam Six have captured the imaginations of every species of listenership – both at home and overseas.
Since forming in late 2006 their music has infiltrated almost every creative niche, being adapted into animated short films, burlesque routines, musical theatre, fringe festival revues, documentary soundtracks, motion picture scores and even a comic strip. Over the years they have won praise and support from the likes of Supergrass, The Mighty Boosh, Har Mar Superstar, Mark Steel, The Hell’s Angels, BBC Radio and even the Beat Poet biographer Barry Miles – both for their furious onstage energy and Louis’ manic lyrical gymnastics.
Their infamous live shows – incorporating rock, jazz, folk and theatre influences – have proved time and time again that the group is at home on any line-up, even sharing the bill with such disparate acts as Motorhead, Sun Ra’s Arkestra, I Am Kloot, Eliza Carthy, Emmanuel Jal and The Blockheads. In the last year alone they have toured Europe, the States and Mexico, inspiring stage invasions, dancing in the aisles and a confused mixture of exhaustion and bonhomie wherever they go.
They are signed to Debt Records.
Hailed by Iron & Wine’s Samuel Beam as ‘the master of the loop pedal’, multi instrumentalist Marc Rigelsford, AKA the Manchester based Magic Arm, is set to release ‘Widths and Heights’ on Switchflicker Records in July. Splendidly eclectic, ‘Widths and Heights’ is a masterpiece of musicianship, with layers of sounds, bleeps and vocals all fighting for supremacy over each other, yet working side by side to produce a playfully organic gem, whilst at the same time serving the best interests of pop music.
Radio 1′s Huw Stephens, always the baton bearer for new music, championed Magic Arm’s last release, the ‘Outdoor Games’ EP, released last year – After the successful release of the EP, which received critical acclaim from the press, Marc locked himself away to write for four months, and then spent a further six months in the studio to put the finishing touches to ‘Widths and Heights’, and his debut album with Robin Housman.

MEN DIAMLER has been pulling himself and his one-wheeled suitcase
around the four corners of the UK for several years now. Despite an
almost operatic voice that could earn him money singing Rossini at
italian Restaurants, Men Diamler instead plays barns and dives singing
about phantom horses, dying prostitutes and life's gentle punches. It
doesn't add up, but frankly, does anything? As a live act, Men
Diamler sometimes tears up the stage, as in, quite literally, tearing
it up, and as a spectator you are not quite sure where the "audience"
and "performer" begin. Over the years, Men Diamler's reputation has
seen him share the stage with the likes of Billy Childish, Tony Allen,
Josephine Foster & Scout Niblett to name but a few. A new album is
due out in August. He likes Serge Gainsbourg, Werner Herzog & Doves
Farm Gluten-Free-Cookies a little too much.

New Education have been hailed as 'The light at the end of the tunnel for proper British rock 'n' roll’’ by the NME. Entertainment Focus says ‘‘Strong drum beats, thrashing guitars and a slurry northern vocal. It’s like the once fab Oasis are back.’ Zane Lowe is also a huge fan and has shown his support with numerous plays on Radio 1.
New Education were formed by brothers Ryan Dooley (vocals, guitar) and Jack Dooley (bass, backing vocals) and long-time friends David Cartwright (guitar) and Will Heaney (drums).
Influenced by bands like Oasis, The Cure and The Clash, Ryan writes gritty, assured rock songs which the band describe as the sound of “the Midlands calling”. They have the thump of Kasabian, the epic everyman appeal of The Enemy and the swagger of Weller, but there’s no living and dying in malicious towns in their songs. Instead, like Oasis circa ‘Champagne Supernova’, they aim at liberating their listeners with a life-affirming melody.
Having released three sold out singles on indie label KIDS (responsible for launching The Wombats, The Whip and iLIKETRAINS) This spring New Education are heading to Canada to record their debut album with legendary producers Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, NiN, Jane’s Addiction) and Garth Richardson (Biffy Clyro, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Gallows).
With a nationwide tour soon to be announced as well as a busy summer festival schedule, 2010 will be New Education’s year to show the world what they’re made of.
In September 2005 i took the huge step of leaving home and moving to Manchester to begin a college course in music performance/business, and to try and start a career. I played lots of open mic nights where I met James Harrington, tour manager to just about every band/act to come out of Mancunia in the last 10 years. He got me some money from a big scary record label down in London, so I could make a nice demo. It was all really exciting but at the end of it I didn’t like what I’d recorded so the label never got their CD. I spent 2006 gigging and developing my sound. I also changed my stage name to Nomad Jones, which subsequently opened the door to some huge gigs. By that Christmas, I’d played shows with Badly Drawn Boy, Elbow, Stephen Fretwell, Fionn Regan, Liam Frost and Paolo Nutini. l’d also aquired some help in the form of Elise, my violinist. In February 2007 I started to record my songs with engineer Paul Mortlock and some other fantastic musicians. At this point I’m about to release my first record, entitled “The TV Light EP”. I hope those of you who hear it will enjoy it….. Onwards and Upwards!
It’s summer and you don’t want to hang out in the record store. Pacific! thought about that for some time and then we decided to release a T-shirt with a design made by our visual collaborator, the French illustrator Stephane Manel. The T-shirt comes with download codes attached in the neck so that you can download our best remixes made by the incredible French artist Breakbot (Moshi Moshi Records) and the new hot Swedish act The Touch (Trunkfunk Records).

With massive beats and a booming bass, RSS are shaking the room, soundtracking the 21st century. The collective are out on tour making music that is a cut up of all the great underground sounds that are everywhere in the modern, fractured British music scene. A musical bit of this and a bit of that rolled up and smoking is what British street music sounds like now- a fractured rush of beats, bass and guitar tunes coming out of bed-sit windows and cranked car stereos. The music is everywhere and a future-musician navigates this thrilling see saw of sound with an open mind and an adventurous spirit.
Blowing the myth that music is not going forwards, RSS are not only re-writing the script, they are re-wiring just what modern music is. They are navigating the cutting edge of the dance underground and bringing it back to the indie nation like the Roses and the Mondays once did with acid house and The Specials did with SKA. This is at the core of all great music and this is the fusion 21st century styles.
The digital that interests RSS is pushing forwards- stalking the furthermost points of possibility and it’s no mistake that in 2010 some of the most groundbreaking music is coming from the sheer possibilities provided by the technological. Along with MIA, RSS represents the radical mainstream fringe getting to grips with the endless rush of new sounds out there.
They make a heavy, heavy sound but they are not pure noise, this is a party. The beats are superbly kinetic and live are quickly pumped into dance action. On top RSS and their charismatic Cohort, Matic, deal out the lines in tough northern brogue, MCing the whole show and driving the audience to a frenzy.
RSS is the sound of the real UK- the mash up of cultures and noise that makes up the real Saturday nights just beyond the chain bar hell of the city centres. This is the result of the melting pot mixture of music on the streets that is a million miles away from the jangling indie world of the mainstream media.
RSS have Drafted in Co-Writers Jimmy Welsh and Cory Kilduff (From Trans Atlantic Tech House Duo Ocelot) as well as Jagz Kooner Ex Sabres of Paradise (whom has created Remixes for everyone from Massive Attack to Kasabian and Primal Scream as well as working with Andrew Weatherall on Sabres Of Paradise) The Ranks are further bolstered by Sheffield MC Matic and Reverend & The Makers Keyboard/Vocalist Laura Manuel and feature guest appearances from Kano, Blak Twang and Roots Manuva.
Their journey is the real sound of the suburbs, the real soundtrack to modern UK- the sound of a million car stereos, crackling iPods and mobiles, the heavy bass colliding with the trad indie love of the song is a hypnotic potion and this makes them a very powerful beast indeed.

Acclaimed acoustic duo Rue Royale are on the road....again. Brookln and Ruth Dekker have barely stopped for breath since launching their labour of love four years ago.
The Anglo-American pair started performing together in 2006 before taking the full-time touring band plunge in 2008, relocating from Brookln's Chicago hometown to England shortly afterwards.
Now based in the East Midlands, they have played over 350 shows straddling both sides of the pond - taking in festivals, house concerts, club gigs and industry showcases across Europe and the US.
Named after a road running through the Chicago suburbs, Rue Royale's sense of journey is written all over their beguiling music, influenced by the likes of Fleetwood Mac, John Martyn, and the northern UK soul of Doves and Elbow.

"After the quarrel she managed to take the seat next to the driver's from me. And as sweet tears rolled down from her face, she started struggling with the car radio. When finally the sad sound of Johnny Cash flowed through our rumbling cage, we were settled. I think she really thought that the green 'CAS' on the display stood for the Johnny Cash-tape which was playing..."
Sexton Creeps recorded 'CAS' on the 22nd & 23rd of July 2006 at the Bassa & Poly Studio, Eelderwolde, in a pile of hay. During that exact same time, the leadsinger's sister gave birth to a healthy son: CAS.
The demo is being mixed by AVOID.

Sophie’s Pigeons have been performing around the UK for just over a year after forming in the late summer of 2006. The Manchester based band have stirred up a commotion of excitement within the North West Folk scene, breaking conventions and bringing a pop vibe to an ever popular scene. The ‘almost’ all girl band have quickly launched onto the global arts festival, that is Ladyfest and have performed at a number of the female ran Ladyfests around the country in the past 12 months.
A seven track studio album has been completed and is due for release in late September. This will be preceded by a one track single due for release in late August. A short tour is currently being put together to coincide with the album release. A ten track compilation of 4-track and live recordings ‘Other Songs From Lakes’ is also nearly complete, though a release date has yet to be confirmed
Since they first appeared on the Manchester scene, Suzuki Method have accomplished the rather unlikely feat of marrying the polar worlds of hard rock and eighties hard dance. Like Queens Of The Stone Age transplanted to the Hacienda, circa 1988, Suzuki Method is a band that hits you right in the solar plexus, while simultaneously energising your dancing feet. Intelligent, principled and defiantly old-school in their business approach they have recently formed an alliance with the independent Manchester based label Factory Foundation Recordings. Armed with a mind blowing debut EP due for release late September, Suzuki Method have firmly pitched themselves as true rock 'n' roll outsiders destined gatecrash the Manc music party in 2010.
The Black Atlantic is an acoustic indie pop band from Groningen, the Netherlands. Their music is an introspective and intimate affair of melancholy, folk influenced acoustic pop, relying heavily on vocal harmonies and melody on soft strummed guitars, piano and minimal percussion. The band often uses nature imagery to express their stories on love, death and family. The band has toured in various incarnations around the world (US, EU, UK) and have played with bands such as Nada Surf, Patrick Watson and Saturday Looks Good to Me. They recently finished their debut album, entitled “Reverence for Fallen Trees”, most of which was recorded over the fall of 2008 in a log cabin in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York.
The Ironweed Project is the brainchild of renowned writer, producer and vocalist, Aniff Akinola, founding member of cult manc hip-hop outfit ‘Chapter and the Verse’, co-writer of a Guy Called Gerald’s classic house anthem ‘Voodoo Ray’, co-writer of Kirsty MacColl’s hit ‘Walking Down Madison’ and general co-conspirator of such 90′s electronic luminaries as The Orb, Steve Hillage and The Beloved. Seeking inspiration for his latest venture, Aniff appears to have taken the same trip to the Mississippi crossroads as legendary bluesman Robert Johnson, but rather than sell his soul to Satan, he merely passed him a bottle of Bourbon and the pair bonded over a love of George Clinton, The KLF and the Delta Blues. Just as Johnson returned from the crossroads as the greatest bluesman in the Delta, Aniff returns home (his soul still intact) a transformed man – an electro-bluesman for the 21st century: ‘Ironweed.’
The Paris Riots release their debut single The Indian / Hotel of Infidels on limited edition CD and through iTunes on Monday October 6th. The single will be available through Piccadilly Records in Manchester and mail order through the website.
Single launches will be taking place in Manchester and London.
The Street Style Surgery (SSS) is a social enterprise that hosts unique and funky ‘Street Style’ fashion workshops. The SSS workshop gives young people the opportunity to express their fashion style in a creative, fun and easy going environment and introduces them to the fact that fashion does not need to be something that is followed or bought into, but can be something they can create and adapt.
An example activity during one of the workshops consists of taking a blank garment, e.g. a t-shirt and using fabric spray paints, fabric applique, heat transfer and decoration to fully customize it to the young person’s induvidual design tastes or to a set brief. The workshops can culminate in photo-shoots or a mini fashion show within the organization. The whole process from design to finished product gives the participants a real boost and raises their confidence levels.
The workshops can be tailor made to suit the needs of your organization, i.e. duration and content. Please see website.

The Virginmarys are a three piece rock band from Macclesfield.
In an era where they say that less is definitely more, The Virginmarys are the real deal. Never being a band to do things by halves the young Macclesfield power trio have built a reputation for themselves with a three pointy attack: Explosive live performances, killer songs that will have you hanging from the edge of your seat and an astonishing belief and sheer passion that's poured into everything they do.
Drawing on influences that range from the early blues to heavy rock by the way of psychedelica of the late 60s & 70s, The Virginmarys continue to wow both critics and fans alike with their powerful & unique sound.
2009 saw The Virginmarys playing to strong audiences in their local area & have now started to spread their magic further afield.
Having just recorded their debut album 'Cast The First Stone' with GUN singer Toby Jepson in the producer's chair & legendary Mike 'Aerosmith/AC/DC /Metallica/Cult' Fraser clearing his desk to get involved by mixing the album, 2010 will see the band playing throughout the country taking their refreshing brand of Rock N Roll to new & hungry audiences.
This hotly tipped awaited debut is released on Monday 17th May at the band's Mancheste'Band On The Wall' special album launch show and has been preceded by Classic Rock magazine tipping them as one of their top bands to watch out for in 2010.

The Whip are currently recording their 2nd album for Southern Fried Records with Jagz Kooner (Primal Scream) which will be released in the autumn of 2010. One thing becomes painfully obvious; We Swim You Jump shows an immense amount of promise. This is a band that, in a brief five songs, totaling only 15 minutes and 23 seconds, has already proved themselves a force to be recognized and a band warranting widespread attention, requiring countless ears to listen and mouths to spread the word, and demanding, above all, to be heard. Fensepost
- June 2008, Richard and Niek had to make up a name quickly after they are asked to play their first shows in berlin (DE), hamburg (DE) and noorderzon (NL).
The Edinburgh based three piece, Ally, Kayus and G, met as young teens in the only under 18’s hip hop club in town. Sharing a love of soul, reggae, old school hip-hop and cheesy 90’s pop tunes, they started out recording music in their bedrooms, using only a karaoke machine and a plastic microphone from Argos.
After releasing their anthemic debut single ‘Straight Back On It’, the boys have been keeping themselves busy: feverishly touring and recording fresh new material, and remixing numerous tracks for Phoenix, Golden Silvers, Shoes vs. Primary 1, Dan Black and Esser. They’ve been constantly on the road, refining and developing their critically acclaimed and brilliantly choreographed live shows, impressing crowds with their outrageous dance moves throughout the UK and Europe.
